15 METRES OF SNOW EVERY WINTER

Mt.T receives approximately 15 metres of snowfall each year.

But it is not just the amount of snow that makes this area special.

The mountains of the Tanigawa range are located on the border between Niigata and Gunma.

Moisture from the Sea of Japan is squeezed out as the snow clouds move towards the mountains on the Niigata side. By the time the clouds reach the Tanigawa mountain range and the high mountains on the Gunma side, much of the moisture has already been released.

Combined with the extremely cold temperatures at altitude, this creates dry, light and exceptionally high-quality powder snow.
This is the kind of snow that powder skiers come to Japan looking for.

A MOUNTAIN FOR POWDER LOVERS

Mt.T offers a surprisingly challenging ski area.

MT.T AT A GLANCE

The terrain inside the ski area ranges from approximately 15 to 38 degrees, while the surrounding backcountry offers slopes of approximately 30 to 50 degrees.

For experienced skiers and snowboarders, this provides a fantastic combination of steep terrain and deep powder.

During the peak season, Mt.T limits lift ticket sales to just 150 tickets per day.

The aim is simple:

To allow skiers and snowboarders to enjoy the powder snow on the mountain itself.

Rather than packing the slopes with large numbers of visitors, Mt.T deliberately limits the number of people on the mountain.

For powder skiers, this means a better chance of finding fresh snow and enjoying the mountain without the crowds found at some of Japan’s larger resorts.

One of the biggest advantages of choosing Minakami is the variety of skiing available in the area.

There are several other ski resorts accessible from Minakami, offering a range of terrain and facilities for different levels of skier.

Families with young children and beginners can enjoy gentler slopes and a more relaxed skiing environment, while intermediate and advanced skiers can explore more challenging terrain.

English-speaking guided backcountry ski and snowboard tours are available and are particularly popular with international visitors.

Backcountry skiing requires appropriate experience, equipment and mountain knowledge. Conditions can change rapidly, and all backcountry activities are subject to weather, snow and avalanche conditions.
